NEW YORK CITY MARRIAGE RECORDS - NEW YORK CITY MARRIAGE CERTIFICATES

NEW YORK CITY MARRIAGE RECORDS

MARRIAGE RECORDS AND CERTIFICATES
FOR MANHATTAN - NEW YORK CITY

The information presented here is a detailed guide for finding and obtaining copies of New York City Marriage Records and New York City Marriage Certificates for ancestors and relatives who were married in New York City, Manhattan New York County.

Photocopies of New York City marriages that occurred during the years of 1866 through 1937 can be obtained either through the LDS Family and Church History Department located in Salt Lake City, Utah or through the New York City Vital Records at the Municipal Records which will be explained further.

The most affordable solution of obtaining photocopies of New York City Marriage records is by sending a request to the LDS Family and Church History Department in Salt Lake City.

The first step in placing such a request is to download and print out a Request for Photocopies form.

You will then need to find an actual New York City Marriage Certificate number for the New York City based marriage certificate you are searching for. Luckily there is a very good online database at the German Genealogy Group web site which you can visit here: www.germangenealogygroup.com

On the left hand side menu, mouseover the link titled Databases and then click the link Vital Record Database. Scroll down a little bit until you see the section titled NYC Databases. Here is where you click on either the link New York City Grooms Index or New York City Brides Index.

For the next few steps on how to complete the process, we are going to use an example. Let us say that we are looking for a New York City Marriage record for a John Smith who was married on February 12, 1905 in New York City, New York County.

You would click on the link New York City Grooms Index which provides an online index database of marriages for grooms that provide marriage certificate numbers. Please keep in mind that the database is not 100% complete (we shall explain further on how to find New York City marriage index records that are not listed in the database).

Then you would continue further by clicking the link "Click Here" under the wording "To Search New York City Marriage Records".

This will take you to the NYC Grooms Record Search page. It is here where you can perform searches for New York City based grooms, either using exact, wildcard or soundex methods. In our example we see that John Smith who was married in New York City, New York County on February 12, 1905 has a marriage certificate # 4029

The last key information you need to find is the LDS microfilm number on which this New York City Marriage Certificate is to be found. To do this you would then go to the Manhattan marriage records, 1866-1937 - index 1866-1937 page.

On the left column you would scroll down to the proper row in which the Marriage Certificate number and date range would fall under.

Using the information on this page we can determine that John Smith's New York City Marriage Certificate # 4029 that occurred on February 12, 1905 will be found on the FHL United States & Canada Film # 1556972

Now that you know both the New York City Marriage Certificate number and LDS FHL Microfilm number you can now fill out the LDS Request for Photocopies form which you have downloaded and printed out from earlier.

On the second page of the form there is an area titled "General Microfilm or Microfiche" which is where you will fill out the pertinent information.

Under the column for "Family History Microfilm or Microfiche number" number is where you would write in 1556972 for the above John Smith example. For the "Name of Individual" you would write in John Smith.

For the "Title of Record" column you should write in "Manhattan marriage records, 1866-1937".

For the "Event Type" column you would write in M for Marriage.

For the "Complete Event Date" column you would write in 12 Feb 1905.

For the "Complete Event Place" column write in Manhattan, NY.

For the "Registration of Page Number" column you would write in the marriage certificate number which is 4029.

The above example of how to fill out the LDS Request for Photocopies form was using the details we found for John Smith. You would of course fill out the form with the details for the ancestor, relative or person of interest that you are seeking a New York City Marriage Record for.

You can also search through for New York City Marriages for Brides via the New York City Brides Record Index database on the www.germangenealogygroup.com web site.

As mentioned earlier, the online database is not 100% complete, so there may be times that you will have to work a little harder in tracking down a New York City Marriage certificate number.

If you are local to the New York City area, you would pay a visit to a local LDS Family Search Center which should contain a full selection of the New York City marriage index microfilms which you can search through.

If you are not local to the New York City area, you should be able to have the New York City marriage index microfilms inter loaned to your local LDS Family Search Center. You might also be able to have the LDS microfilms inter loaned to you via your local Public Library (just ask your Public Library if they take part in a system of receiving inter loans of microfilms from the main LDS Family History Library in Salt Lake City).

There may be times where you might need some additional help in tracking down New York City Marriage records. For this situation you might want to consider placing a search request for a New York City Marriage record via the New York City Municipal Archives web site on the Vital Records - Marriage Certificate page.
